Chilterns Run II - The Sequel
The second Chilterns Run took place on Sunday 29 Feb 2004.
The weather was kind to MINI2ers who took part in the run, despite threatening to cover South East England with snow throughout the weekend.
It was a very good turnout for the day, with allegedly 90 MINIs being counted during the stopover at the MINI factory just before lunch. The stopover was made possible by goonery of MINI2, who kindly arranged it for us.
Thanks to some frantic last-minute organisation by goonery, an auction of MINI goodies held at the hotel where DK and the others stayed the night, and a collection was made during the weekend for MINI UK's designated charity - WHIZ-KIDZ. Thanks to the generosity of MINI2ers who participated in the auction, and everyone else who had made donations, a collection of several hundred pounds is anticipated. The exact figure will be posted later on MINI2, once confirmed.
The event was attended by a significant number of first-timers as well as seasoned MINI2ers. Three US MINI2ers (AprilWhine, Jim Ray and ruthie) came over to join in the fun. Sadly Jim was unwell on Sunday and had to miss the run. Also missed was AidenL who had to pull out of this event due to sickness in the family.
The run itself was enjoyable with no major incident (no mass three point turn in the middle of the road etc). We were told that one lady was seen in her nightdress waving at MINIs as they passed by, possibly provoked by noise or other disturbance. Also observed were a couple of MINIs racing each other up a hill, and certain car(s) had been reported to be driving too close to the ones in front. All of which were probably risky and dangerous behaviours.
DK found herself leading a pack several times during the last leg of the run, despite having no navigator to guide her. She pulled over to let other cars with navigators to jump to the front in the hope that they would lead the pack. Unfortunately, the new leading cars disappeared one after another, and DK found herself completely lost when she arrived at a roundabout with no MINI in front to guide her. Not a pleasant experience!
All in all, a great start to DK and Apple's MINI calendar for 2004!
