Cullen Icecream Run Weekend 18 - 21 Jul 2003
DK enlisted for the Icecream Run 2003 as soon as the original thread appeared on MINI2.com back in June 2002! Owing to the distances that they had to travel to attend the event, the run turned out to be an enjoyable, 4-day, long weekend for DK, Mr DK and Apple. For more information about the run itself, which was organised by zoooooom and Monsta Mo Mini of MINI2 fame, please click here to go to the main thread in MINI2.com.
Team Apple started their journey on the evening of Thursday, 17 July, stopping at Grimsby for the night, before heading to Perth. Their stopover in Perth allowed them a lie-in since the start of the run was only 2 miles from the hotel. Bliss! Some of the other MINIs had to drive from Edinburgh on Saturday morning!
The route of the Icecream Run was the easiest to follow of all the runs attended by DK, and Mr DK was particularly relieved to find only 2 sides of A4 notes to read - no motion sickness from him this time! The route took Team Apple through breathtaking countryside, and Mr DK has already decided to return to Cullen for a longer holiday! The Icecream Shop in Cullen lived up to its reputation, and everyone appeared to have enjoyed themselves.
The run was not without incident. Four cars were involved in an accident about three quarters of the way through the run, and 2 of the cars were damaged severely . Luckily (and surprisingly), no one suffered any serious injury. For DK, this was the third UK run in succession to be marred by a driving incident!!!
After the run, the MINI2ers enjoyed a dinner as good as one would expect from Hilton International, and it was a good while later that MINI2's Bonnie Scotland took those who could still cope to sample the Scottish hospitality of a nearby pub - allegedly until the wee small hours of the morning. DK and Mr DK failed to stay the course, and had to excuse themselves, collapsing in a heap in the privacy of their room.
On Sunday, DK and Mr DK had a hearty Scottish breakfast, and left the hotel soon afterwards with a hastily made plan to detour to Edinburgh for a walkabout and a spot of lunch. For once, all went according to plan, and, after the obligatory stroll through Princes Gardens, down Princes Street, and into the Royal Mile, DK found the huge piece of superb Aberdeen Angus Sirloin that would sustain her for that evening's drive to Whitby. Team Apple arrived in Whitby too late for dinner, but early enough for supper - a small portion of fish and chips eaten whilst sitting on the quayside! Monday's impromptu lunchtime detour was to Skegness, and Team Apple returned to base in Norfolk shortly before 1830h.
Since Mr DK had kippers every morning of the trip, he counts it a success! As for DK, she had a great weekend - full breakfast every morning, taking Apple for a 1000+mile round trip, meeting up with old friends and making new acquaintances ... the list goes on. Here are a few pictures from their lovely trip around Scotland.
A MINI is not just a car - it is a way of life!
